Executive Service Positions
The Department of Human Resources does not process applications for Executive Service jobs. To apply for these jobs, you should contact TBI directly about vacancies. These positions can be applied for by sending in a resume.
Employment Background Checks
All applicants for positions with TBI will be thoroughly investigated, including contacting former and current employers, references, acquaintances and neighbors, as well as reviewing school, credit, arrest, medical and military records. A complete background investigation is assessed before a final decision on employment is made. The background investigation takes from two to six weeks to complete. Special Agent positions also require full physical and psychological exams.
State Employee Benefits
There are a variety of benefits provided to TBI employees through the state. They include health insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, long-term health care insurance and optional special accident insurance.
Full-time employees earn annual and sick leave monthly based on the length of time they are employed with TBI. There are 11 paid holidays, a flexible benefits plan, 401 (k) matching program and higher education fee discounts and waivers available to employees and their families.
The TBI Human Resource Department administers the TBI Internship Program. The TBI offers a ten-week, non-paid internship to junior and senior college students or master’s level students pursuing undergraduate degrees in criminal justice, forensic services or related areas. TBI’s Human Resources Department is currently not accepting internship applications.
Basic Criminal Investigation School
The TBI agents’s school is a 14 week Basic Criminal Investigation school required for all newly hired agents and forensic scientists. The school is held at the Tennessee Codes and Fire Academy located in Shelbyville, Tennessee. Agents are introduced to TBI policy and procedures and are trained to conduct a variety of investigations including everything from murders to public corruption cases.
The agents are required to live on campus Monday through Friday for the entire eleven weeks. While at the school, agents participate in a mix of classroom lectures and practical field exercises. Toward the end of the training, agents team up to compete against one other in the TBI’s own CSI school. Real life crime scenes worked by our field agents are recreated. New hires then work against each other to see who can process the scene most thoroughly.
Below is a list of some of the classes those agents participate in during their eleven week stay.
